New Section 232 Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum Derivative Products Announced

On February 14, 2025, the Trump administration released a list of steel and aluminum derivative products that will be subject to the 25% tariffs under Section 232. These measures, impacting a broad range of downstream goods—including household items, furniture, cookware, and industrial components—are set to be published in the Federal Register on February 18, 2025.

The tariffs will take effect once the Secretary of Commerce certifies that adequate systems are in place for revenue collection, with no set timeline for certification. Notably, the tariff application varies: products in Chapters 73 and 76 will be taxed on their full value, while others will be taxed based only on their steel or aluminum content.

These duties are cumulative, meaning affected products may also be subject to other tariffs, including MFN duties and additional tariffs on Chinese-origin goods. Importers should review the specific HTS subheadings and prepare for the potential cost implications.
